Gallery and Facts
Portland International Airport was first located on the Swan Island, in 1926, and due to difficulties to expand the airfield, plans to relocate it were conceived in 1935. Later on, in 1936, the current Portland International Airport site was purchased to transform the site into a “super airport”. In 1959, after a few improvements and the opening of a new terminal, the airport was given the “International” designation to its name.
Portland International Airport is nowadays the largest airport in Oregon and its passenger travel and air cargo accounts for 90% and 95% of the whole state respectively.

Beautiful Airport neat&clean pieceful environment.
One of the best airports around. Beats LAX and San Francisco hands down. Staff are helpful and friendly and the airport is laid out well.
Over the past ten months, I’ve flown into and out of PDX about 5 times. The friendliness of the airline, TSA, restaurant, shop, and airport personnel particularly impressed me. Each time I’ve been there, everything has run very smoothly. I love that the MAX takes right up to the airport’s front doors.
PDX Tsa Bad - Airport Great
Huge lines exist because TSA doesn’t manage the flow well. Get there early or stand in absolute disbelief (which you will anyway) as you inch your way to the scanners. Lines to both terminals today were stacked to the middle of the mall. Then TSA agents were walking around mumbling announcements that one line (of two) was only for SW Airlines passengers. This created a panic and when everyone was shuffling to other line it became clear that TSA was telling SW passengers to go to another special line to not miss their flight! This created another shuffle and people who had waited patiently where they were lost more spots in line as the confused angry crowd came together again. THEN the TSA decided to announce another set of ropes could be used creating another shuffle only that line just merged back to the original line up ahead giving those in back of us spots ahead of us! BAD

I fly in/out of PDX about half a dozen times a year. It is a great little airport. The MAX train comes right into the terminal building. I use it all the time. There are MAX ticket machines in the terminal. The security lines are about like everywhere else, no better no worse. Early in the morning it’s fine, at holidays it’s bad. And if you didn’t allow enough time, it’s guaranteed to positively suck. That’s life. Oh, and the WiFi is free.
PDX Airport
They did not think out the security clearance very well. Long lines at rush hour. As far as MAX, I travel business and don’t know anyone who uses this. Why didn’t they make stops in the parking areas to save on shuttles, I don’t know.
Great!!!
I lived in Portland, OR for over 8 years, thus I used the Int’l Airport several times… It is one of the most comfortable and organized airports I have ever been to. The MAX helps trips between the airport and downtown Portland, Gresham and Hillsboro become short, unexpensive trips…
2024 review – they are now almost done with an airport face lift with natural beams and they brought back the famous carpet from the 80s.
Supposed to be much more breezier and they are bringing in CLEAR scanners too. Re-opening Aug. But all of the usual awesomeness is still there not to worry – plus a mini movie theater :) Gotta love PDX.
